The doumbek is also called a darbuka and sometimes a goblet drum and comes from the Middle East. These models are cast on a durable aluminum body and those with mosaic designs are hand-inlayed with mother of pearl and other design elements. The common sounds produced when playing a doumbek are dooms or dums and teks and given the versatility and dynamic nature of the doumbek, a variety of sounds can be produced at a broad ranges. The doumbek is commonly used throughout the Middle East, Gulf Region, North Africa, and Turkey, however, it's popularity has brought it to the forefront in world percussion. Expect to see the doumbek as part of folk ensembles, pop music, belly dance performances, and even fusion or world music.
